Govardhan – The Hill Krishna Lifted, The Living Lord of Braj

When the Brajvasis once faced Indra’s wrath, Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill for seven days and seven nights, shielding everyone beneath its shelter. From that moment, Giriraj Maharaj became the Supreme Refuge of Devotion. Pilgrims say: “He who embraces Giriraj with love, receives Krishna’s grace without measure."

The Leela of Love and Exchange

1. Daan Ghati

Daan Ghati is among the most visited shrines of Govardhan, resonating with Krishna’s playful leelas. The very name “Daan” means offering or tax. It was here that Krishna stopped the gopis carrying pots of butter, curd, and milk, demanding they pay a “tax of love” before crossing.

2.  Mukharbind

The most sacred and intimate darshan of Giriraj is His Mukharbind, literally “Lotus Face.” Here devotees do not see a hill, but the living Lord Himself, smiling as Krishna.

3.  Mansi Ganga

At the heart of Govardhan town lies Mansi Ganga, a lake born of love and longing.
The Lake of Blossoms

4.  Kusum Sarovar

Kusum Sarovar, surrounded by majestic sandstone ghats and chhatris, is a jewel of Braj. Its name means “Lake of Flowers,” for here Radha and Her sakhis came to pluck flowers for Krishna.
